Haworth celebrates new global HQ

Holland, Michigan, USA - 21st May, 2008

Haworth, Inc. celebrated the grand opening of its new global headquarters on 21st May, 2008.

A ribbon cutting ceremony featured Dick Haworth, Chairman of the Board; Franco Bianchi, President & CEO; the Haworth family; representatives from Perkins+Will, the project's architecture and design firm; and representatives from the federal government.

The new building, called One Haworth Center, includes:

  • A total renovation of 28,000 sqm, with a 300 metre new façade and a three-story, 3,250 sqm. glass atrium

  • A registration for USGBC LEED-NC (New Construction) Gold

  • Daylight and views for 90 percent of the 800 plus workstations

  • Individual lighting and temperature controls for work areas

  • A 4,000 sqm. roof covered with growing vegetation for the new glass atrium - one of the largest modular green roofs in North America

  • 20 percent increase in total area with expected energy use remaining at pre-renovation levels as a result of improved sustainability

During the deconstruction phase of the renovation process, Haworth recycled over 98 percent of the old building.  This success was achieved through the combined efforts of Haworth and construction partners Turner Construction and Homrich Incorporated.

It included the following efforts:

  1. The recycled material was diverted from landfills with the concrete floors and steel beams reused in the new building

  2. Haworth far exceeded the average of 20-30 percent construction waste recovery by recovering all but two percent of the 3,260 metres of waste.

  3. Over 290 tonnes of steel and 11.3 tonnes of other metals were recycled - a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to taking 140 cars off the road for one year

  4. A Haworth partnership with Aggregate Management, LLC, used concrete waste dust from the Haworth Kentwood manufacturing site and all window glass from the old building to make new concrete construction blocks. The materials from these two waste streams created over 8,000 blocks for the new One Haworth Center from 8.4 tonnes of glass and 2.94 tonnes of concrete waste dust.

  5. Additional recycling removed 26,400 kilograms of carpet tiles. These tiles were either donated or reused in other Haworth facilities. The largest quantity was sent to a carpet tile recycling company, OPT3, to be cleaned, sanitised and stain shield treated for resale. Tiles that are not reusable were recycled as an alternative fuel source or into plastics used for moulding or more carpet backing.

  6. Items as minor as door locksets removed for use in other Haworth facilities

  7. Down-cycling debris for aggregate used in road-bed construction

  8. Furnishings and furniture donations to schools and charitable organisations - one school received materials with a replacement value in excess of €38,700

  9. Considering no amount of material too small or obscure to recycle - 280 litres of hydraulic fluid was drained from lifts, treated and reused

The implementation of this comprehensive recycling program presents One Haworth Center as a living laboratory for sustainable building and a proving ground for Haworth's sustainable journey.
