Haworth Italy hosts Plia design competition
Haworth Creative Center, Milan, Italy - 18th April, 2008
On Friday 18th April, Haworth Italy hosted the "Plia NABA Futurarium" event at its Creative Center in Milan. This was towards the end of the week of the "Salone del Mobile" (International Furniture Fair).
The "Plia NABA Futurarium" project originates from the partnership between NABA (Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti Milano ) and Haworth. It was a competition launched by NABA for the students of the school to redesign the Plia chair.
The culmination of their efforts was judged by Haworth and NABA who selected the 50 best designs from the competition. These winners were displayed at a function in the evening, and then taken on a dealer roadshow around Italy.
In November they will return to Milan and be sold in a Charity Auction for the Association "Vida a Pititinga Onlus", a solidarity project for the children and families of the community of Pititinga, in the north east of Brazil.
The selection of the designs shown here are a testament to the design skills, and the joy in experimentation that is inseparably linked with Italy.
Plia received great acclaim when it was launched at the same Furniture Fair back in 1967. The Italian designer, Giancarlo Piretti, redefined the folding chair. His development of the "3-disc hinge" is considered a stroke of genius.
